101 is done!

Although currently fitted with a Hornby pantograph, 87101 is now complete. Once I have built up further High-speed pans from Hurst models, STEPHENSON is welcome to pop back for a fitting! At least the current pantograph is almost right, albeit a little cumbersome.....

The significantly different roof of 87101 can clearly been seen in the photo above, as can the slight differences in the underframe. The dimensions of the original Lima underframe were not accurate, and as a result, I have compromised..... At least it`s more realistic than the 'off-the-shelf' model!

This model is finished off with a workstained finish, using many reference photographs to get the look just right. The model also features differing buffers at each end, just as the real loco sported during the period modelled (Circa 1993.) The red and yellow Railfreight distribution logos ahve also been given a faded appearance...... Original coupling retained at one end as requested!

Sunday afternoon - 22nd July 2007

To be honest, not much progress since the last update. However, the railfreight logos have been toned down, and warning flashes have been correctly re-positioned. Everything is now ready to put together before weathering commences............ Let the fun begin!!

Coming to a home near you!

The re-built roof was completed some time ago............. However, this has now been painted, and is simply awaiting it`s pantograph to be fitted.
Glazing, horizantal grab-rails, and TDM cables are now all that need fitting to this fine loco!

Saturday afternoon - 3rd March 2007

Pain in the underframe!

The underframe is looking much better today. Of note are the different style of buffers at each end of the locomotive. Most of the extra underfame detailing has now been added and painted accordingly, but I haven`t quite finished.....

It`s not just the roof which made 87101 unique. Extra work has also been carried out on the underframe as can be seen here. Not 100% accurate, due to some inaccuracies by Lima, but at least it`s 'more' correct than before!

Backward steps?

Removing detail, only to replace it with something else sometimes seems like 'one step forward, two steps back' but it just needs to be done! The chassis of 87101 is seen on the left, part way through a 'detail removal' exercise.

Now that some much needed deatil parts have arrived, namely the cast buffers, work has now started on STEPHENSON`s bottom half! Along with the buffers, other details including air-pipes and screw couplings have been added.

Filling the holes.....

Work today has mainly been filling the holes in the roof. The unwanted holes which 'housed' the busbars have been filled with filler, and that huge square hole I put in the roof last year has now been filled with plastic section. You may be wondering why I created a hole, and then filled it, but trust me, it`s quite important for this particular locomotive as the roof arrangement is drastically different from any of the other class 87`s.... The section of roof which was removed had a raised moulding which was not required, and the only option was to cut the unwanted detail out!
The roof area has also seen a few other alterations today, including cab-roof mounted pods....

Saturday evening - 10th February 2007

Picking up from where we left off, STEPHENSON is now back on the treatment table.....
Work has been undertaken on the roof to accomodate the new pantograph, but nothing too exciting to warrant a photograph at this stage.
A little work has also been done today on the front ends of the locomotive.

Saturday afternoon - 9th December 2006

Hole in '101'

87101 STEPHENSON now has a very large hole in the roof. This has been carefully cut away and will be filled with new plastic section. The roof section which can be seen just behind the hole has been filed flat. This is where the new conservator will sit. Unwanted front-end details have also been removed at this point.

For when Eric eats a banana......

...........an amazing transformation occurs. Ok, I`m not bananaman, but this model will be transformed into a much better rendition of 87101 STEPHENSON. This requires much work, particularly to the roof area. Here is the loco I am to start with, before any work is carried out.....
